The Gold Plus of my parents made some really weird whistling noise while reversing today. Never had that before. Can anyone tell me what the f that was?

A couple of manual cars I’ve had make a noise when reversing. I’ve been told it’s because these are “straight cut” gears. I don’t know what that means. If it was this it would always happen but get louder as you go faster.

Straight cut gears (bottom) are those that have the teeth cut straight across the gear, while helical gears (top) are those whose teeth are cut at an angle across the gear. With helical gears, the interfacing teeth make contact with each other progressively which makes it smoother and quieter, though the gears are more expensive to make. With straight cut gears, the interfacing teeth make contact with each other all at once. The gears are easier to make and can take more abuse (perfect for a race car), but aren’t as smooth and are generally not quiet.

That wasn’t it. That’s the typical whine sound which all cars make while reversing. Ours really kind of whistled in a high pitch.

That’s mighty weird... Video description says brake pads (though I don’t see how that kind of sound would come from brake pads), does the sound change or go away if you apply the brakes a little bit?

The brake discs and pads are relatively new on our car and the sound didn’t appear when I drove the car 5-6 hours while backing out of my spot. It occured while engaging the clutch.
